Description
MASTERSEAL MCI 2120 is a surface applied corrosion inhibitor designed to migrate through concrete to form a protective film on the surface of embedded steel reinforcing bars. MASTERSEAL MCI 2120 will migrate through even very dense concrete. MASTERSEAL MCI 2120 slows the rate of corrosion and reduces further corrosion on reinforcing steel, extending the service life of structures.
Primary uses
MASTERSEAL MCI 2120 may be used for:
- All reinforced concrete effected by chloride contamination and carbonation
- Any insitu, pre-cast, pre-stressed and post tensioned concrete elements subject to potential ingress of chlorides or the effects of carbonation
- Marine structures such as jetties, dams, piers and offshore platforms
- Bridge structures, highways and pavement areas subject to harsh environments
- Multi-storey car parking decks, ramps and garages
- Civil structures: pipe supports, utility foundations piles, and pillars
- Buildings and building foundations of all types
- Preventive maintenance of all civil and commercial reinforced concrete structures
Features and benefits
- Forms a protective/passivating film around the reinforcing steel, protecting against chloride attack and corrosion due to carbonation of concrete
- Mixed inhibitor - protects both Anodic and Cathodic areas of steel
- Reduces the permeation rate of chlorides through the concrete to the reinforcing steel
- Is vapour permeable – allows the structure to "breathe"
- Extends the life of all reinforced concrete structures by use of proven corrosion inhibiting technology
- Protective properties do not depend upon chloride concentration levels
- Migrates even through the most dense concrete
- Cost-effective - reduces the requirement for breaking out chloride contaminated or carbonated concrete, which is otherwise sound
- Water based, environmentally friendly
- Easily applied by spray, roller or brush
- Can be overcoated with proprietary repair and protective coating systems
- Does not contain Calcium Nitrate

Preparation of substrate
Surface should be dry, sound, clean and free of all dirt, oil, grease, efflorescence, sealers, coatings, membranes and asphalt. Preparation should be carried out by grit blasting or high pressure water jetting.
Application procedure
Application:
Apply MASTERSEAL MCI 2120 by spray (conventional airless or hand pressure spray equipment), roller, squeegee or brush to any concrete surface. Power trowelled or tightly finished substrates may require two coats with a minimum of 8 hours between coats. When applying a repair mortar, concrete overlay, sealer, or coating, the surface should be thoroughly cleaned by pressure washing or blast cleaning to remove any residue.
Application in hot weather conditions:
In hot weather conditions (over 38°C / 100°F), apply MASTERSEAL MCI 2120 to the concrete when its surface is cooling in the early evening or early morning, when the air is cooler than the substrate. The contraction of the air in the concrete will help to accelerate the migration of corrosion inhibitors into the pores of the substrate. If a white, salt-like layer appears after drying, wet the concrete surface with water. It is only necessary to wet the surface (with a hand spray or similar). Do not attempt to wash-off the white layer as it contains MCI molecules that will migrate even when dry, but by wetting, the process can be greatly accelerated
Consumption
MASTERSEAL MCI 2120 should be applied at a minimum consumption of 0.25 litres / m². Dense, vertical and overhead substrates may require 2 coats at a minimum consumption of 0.125 litres / m² per coat.
Storage
Store in sealed containers in warehouse conditions. Protect from frost.
Shelf life
Shelf life is 24 months in a sealed drums.
Watchpoints
The substrate and ambient temperature should be above freezing. Do not apply if temperature is expected to fall below freezing within 12 hours. MASTERSEAL MCI 2120 will not penetrate film forming sealers, coatings, paints, membranes or asphalt. As with all chemical products, care should be taken during use and storage to avoid contact with eyes, mouth, skin and foodstuffs. Treat splashes to eyes and skin immediately. If accidentally ingested, seek medical attention. Reseal containers after use. Use in well ventilated areas and avoid inhalation.
